Diferent areas of the plasma membrane perform diferent funcions. Has three diferent parts: apical (microvilli) region that have transmembrane proteins that take in sugars and sodium, the cell is anchored on the botom to the extracellular matrix by membrane proteins. On the side, integral (transmembrane) proteins communicate with neighbouring cells. Lealets refer to each layer of the phospholipid bilayer. In many plasma membranes, the outer lealet contains glycolipids and glycoproteins (lipids and proteins with carbohydrate atached) The nature of lipids that make up the membrane. Unsaturated lipids (double bonds exist between some carbons) increase luidity. Saturated fats (each carbon in the chain have all their hydrogens atached) reduce luidity. Crystal signiies order which both states have within membrane regardless of temperature. Membrane luidity must be maintained as it is very important to cell funcion. Balance between ordered (rigid) structure and disordered structure allows: Dynamic interacions between membrane components (e. g. proteins can come together reversibly)
