Document Summary

Defensive cells: phagocytic (engulf and destroy), natural killer cells (secrete protein), liver (releases complement system that punch walls in bacteria) Rapid response due to memory in the immune system. Neutrophils: first set of immune cells that consume bacteria. Targets foreign cells and cause it"s membrane to lose integrity. Fluid enters bacteria to burst the cell. 20+ proteins synthesis are in the liver. Our own polysaccharides help to deactivated this. Inactive at times, and only activate when they see outside cells. Recognizes tangles of alzheimer"s in the brain as foreign and attacks the nerves. Phagocytes engulf bacteria: redness: increase blood flow to bring in neutrophils, macrophages, complement, heat: increase metabolic rate, swelling: fluid contain defensive chemicals, blood, clotting, pain: hampers movements and allowing area to heal. Elevate body temperature to disable a virus. Causes release of pyrogenic cytokines (heat increased small hormones) induce fever by resetting thermostat in hypothalamus. Fevers can be caused by reaction to drugs, cancer, endocrine disturbance.
