He designed features of language (properties: discreteness, symbolic, duality and patterning, sets of discrete/unique sounds, when combined, sound(s) mean something, symbolic (arbitrary) relationship between sounds of a language +meaning, sound + image = meaning, sounds of a language do not mean anything by themselves (you need an image of what that sound represents for there to be meaning, productivity, open systems, there is an infinite # of ways to combine the sounds, we can make new words, w can combine them into infinite combinations, we can lie, displacement (language isn"t tied to the present or to the geographical location of the speaker, can talk about the past, present and future as well as other places, channel, learned, spoken - vocal - to - auditory, sign - tactile - to - visual, not inherent knowledge, rapid fading, noise doesn"t stick around.
