Document Summary
One person, one family, one community collects a lot of stuff and gives it all away under culturally speci c rules. Those who give it away expect to eventually get something back. Different than reciprocity because people give to everyone else whereas reciprocity is direct exchanges. Need to generate surplus in order ot be able to give things away. Ceremonial and economic redistribution of wealth involving indigenous community on the north coast of america. There is a host family with guests. Change of name at different stages of life. A reminder that they gave them gifts so you must give something back. Could be considered a balanced exchange if you accept that the money you give out equals the value of the goods/services you receive. If you agree that the money given up does not equal what you receive. Spite: are unfair because the other person is unfair. Altruism/charity: giving away more than you receive.
