ANSC 3120 Lecture Notes - Lecture 7: Pepsin, Phenylalanine, Oligosaccharide
Document Summary
We care about meeting essential aa requirements- protein is a carrier of these eaa. Protein supplements are very expensive and effect the environment (nitrogen in feces and urine) we want to avoid overfeeding: species differ in their protein needs. Monogastric- must supply the ea to the diet to meet requirements. A suckling ruminant is essentially a monogastric because it has not yet developed a functional rr. Ruminant (developed)- protein and eaa are synthesized by microorganisms if the animal has adequate nitrogen. This is dependent on species and stage of production; ex. a lactating dairy cow will not meet requirements by just supplying nitrogen for the microorganisms need more. Protein supplementation has at least 20% cp. Sources depend on the species; there is 5 or 6 sources depending on how you classify npn (animal protein, microbial protein, plant protein, protein from the sea, synthetic aa, npn)
