ANSC 3120 Lecture Notes - Lecture 11: Mucin, Rumen, Foodborne Illness
Document Summary
Animals can be on pasture 24/7 and get most of their nutrients out of it. We can provide salt blocks, minerals and vitamins. The only supplements for animals on pasture should be mineral and vitamin mix unless forage is low in quality and/or quantity. We do not need to supplement vitamin d if the animals are on pasture during the summer. They need to search for feed in winter and this can still get them enough nutrients. This is not going to work with lactating dairy cow with her young. Animals may still get by on mature pasture. Low quality residues are the straws leftover after the they have harvested the small cereal grains. We do not feed a lot of forages to dairy cow, just there to stimulate rumination chewing. There is a decrease in number of conventional silos compared to bunker silos. They make cubed alfalfa using machine in california (ps and ruminants)
