You will remember that ren descartes was criticized by society in the 17th century for carrying out dissections on conscious experimental animals (often dogs). Dissecting living conscious animals came to be known as vivisection. It is worth remembering that chloroform, discovered by james young simpson, was not available as an anaesthetic until 1847 and ether was not used until 1866. This meant that all invasive experimental surgery before that date was done on conscious animals (and human beings! The brown dog affair was a political controversy about vivisection that arose in england in the early years of the 20th century. William bayliss (later sir william) and ernest starling (his brother-in-law) were very famous physiologists who taught medical students at the university of london. Together they discovered the peptide hormone secretin and described peristalsis of the intestines. Swedish women anti- vivisectionists infiltrated medical lectures at the university of london and reported cruel experiments.
