Document Summary

A signi cance test is a formal procedure for comparing observed data with a hypothesis whose truth we want to assess. The hypothesis is a statement about the population parameters, e. g. , mean value . The results of a test are expressed in terms of a probability that measures how well the data and the hypothesis agree. The statement being tested in a test of signi cance is called the null hypothesis. The test of signi cance is designed to assess the strength of the evidence against the null hypothesis. Usually the null hypothesis is a statement of "no e ect" or "no di erence in the true means". It is convenient also to give a name to the statement we hope or suspect is true insted of h0. Usually, ha is one-sided or two-sided, which refers to whether a parameter di ers from its null hypothesis h0 in a speci c direction or in either direction
