SES- wealth, education, occupational prestige.
People who retire from high status positions have stress associated with retirement.
Gerontology- the study of aging(social processes, issues, practices, and policies associated
with aging and older people) 2 emphases: produce research, theory and critiques about aging.
Work with older adults to create a better life for seniors.
Barrier to studying gerontology- stereotypes-
Prejudice is bias against someone or something and discrimination is unfair treatment of an
individual.
Older adults often have lower levels of mental disorders than other adult age groups. (anxiety,
mood, substance disorders)
Depression is a category the individual is placed into by others.
Distress is the individual's own experience of negative emotions.
Relationship between age and distress is U shaped. Possibly because of acquired efficiency-
they have developed additional coping mechanisms. Could also be caused by selective
pressures.
White women are more likely to report unhappiness later in life. Yang found that factors such as
income, marital status, and health status largely explained negatively effects of age. DIfferential
risk of race and gender largely explain this intersectionality. The stereotype of the unhappy adult
is largely disputed by empirical data.
Aging in Place- placing supports in the community to prevent seniors from having to be
institutionalized. Men have higher mortality rate, women have a higher morbidity rate.
WEEK 1 REVIEW QUESTIONS
1. What are the different dimensions of socioeconomic status (SES), and how may they shape
the aging experience? Three dimensions: wealth, education, occupational prestige.
2. How has the population aged 65+ of Canada in general and Alberta specifically changed over
10 years? How does Alberta differ from Canada in these changes, and what are the reasons for
these differences? It has increased from 10% to 12%, which is a slower increase than that of
the rest of Canada. People in Alberta are aging at the same rate, but are staying the the
workforce longer.
3. Give one example of how popular culture depicts conflicts between older and younger adults,
and how a structural interpretation may provide a different perspective.
A popular culture depiction of elders is that they are financially dependant and a strain on the
economy. This is contrasted by data that says the economic flow is generally downward in
generations until about the age of 70.
