Social structure: status: a recognized social position that an individual occupies in a social structure. Everyone has more than one status, this is the status set. Master status is a status with exceptional importance for social identity (ex. Student, athlete, lawyer: role: behavior expected of someone who holds a particular status, role conflict- incompatibility among roles corresponding to 2+ statuses, role strain- incompatibility of roles corresponding to a single status (ex. Power: capacity of one actor to determine the course of events or the structure of social organization. Can be exercised directly or indirectly: goffman- impression management: symbolic interactionist, dramaturgical approach to studying life. Said that social interaction can be looked at as a theatrical performance with actors, stages, and an audience. Impressions people may have of me, face to face, people try to control what people think of them. If they are trying to control interaction or definition of situation, it is a power relationship.
