PSYC 375 Lecture Notes - Lecture 20: Karl Lashley, Paul Broca, Spatial Memory
Document Summary
Neuropsychology- the study of the relationship between brain function and behavior. Behavioral neuropsychology- study of the biological basis of behavior in humans and other animals. Nicknamed tan because he had an inability to speak any other words clearly. When broca"s area is damaged, it leads to aphasia, which is an impairment of language ability. Early 20th century study of the brain relied on brain sectioning and staining. Modern techniques allow researchers to identify molecular, neurochemical and structural differences among neuronal types. Corsi block-tapping test: short-term recall of spatial position. Requires the rat or mouse to swim to a platform in a pool of water. Place-learning task- subject uses visual cues in the room to locate the hidden platform. Matching-to-place task: the platform location is moved each day. Subject must remember where the new location is. Landmark-learning task- the platform is associated with a discrete cue. Designed to assess movement in the rat.
