Document Summary

Wherever the romans go the roman law goes: romans left and codified system disappeared, anglo-saxons replaced the roman legal system. Their laws were unwritten and based on tribal customs. However, they eventually were codified, but still separate from one another: a common legal system began with william the conqueror, in 1066. His intention was centralized rule (economic and political). William created systems to implement his centralized rule, which included: feudalism, curia regis, royal courts of justice, king"s peace, landed nobility: administer the kings rule over their lands, by being on said land. This is also where we get the role of the chancellor of the exchequer, and is one of the oldest held offices: law lords - no formal legal training. They sit as judges on three different types of courts: court of common pleas civil and landholding legal disputes by commoners, dealt with marriage, inheritance, and land issues, court of king"s bench.
