No effort to explain the reason for something happening. Explanation - seeks to explain why something is happening. Seeks to explain why it is some states developed in the global south whilst other states do not. Developed in the us between 1950s and 1960s american in origin. Emergence of the third world or global south as a consequence of decolonization. Assumptions: all states will develop provided that there is nothing standing in the way of their development. Process of social, economic, political, and ideological change. Change in all aspects (totalistic process of change) Unidirectional moving from point a to point x. Progressive process of moving from an highly unsophisticated, uncomplicated society to become an extremely sophisticated, complex society (simple to complex); moving from something that is undesirable and unpreferred to something desirable and preferred. Goes with the bias that progressive is good (value-laden)
