The president appoints cabinet officials, federal judges, senior civil servants and members of regulatory commissions. The president has the power to pardon criminals and the power to veto legislation. He is the commander-in-chief of the armed forces and makes decisions about deploying those forces. Each state is awarded as many electoral votes as they have congressmen. Most states award a candidate all their votes if that candidate gets a majority of the electoral votes.
