The main authors of the constitution were alexander hamilton and james madison, who believed that human nature would inevitably lead to corruption of power. The constitution assumes that whoever has power will want to abuse it. The branches of government were designed to have checks and balances on each other"s powers. Elected by the people through the states to a four year term. The president is the head of the state and government. The president appoints cabinet officials, federal judges, senior civil servants and members of regulatory commissions. The president has the power to pardon criminals and the power to veto legislation. He is the commander-in-chief of the armed forces and makes decisions about deploying those forces. Each state is awarded as many electoral votes as they have congressmen. Most states award a candidate all their votes if that candidate gets a majority of the electoral votes.
