Preference act utilitarianism replaces pleasure as the basis for measurement, uses preference satisfaction. Advantage- connected to our actual desires, choices and behaviors. What you value is what you prefer. Better able to measure and compare preferences, and determine which acts maximize total preference satisfaction. Sometimes it is too ethically stressful to be impartial in a situation (burning house situation) An act is right if it is the case that if everyone were to act in a similar way in a similar situation, we would maximize happiness. This perspective addresses the criticisms against au regarding promise- breaking, violating individual rights, permitting social injustices and impartiality. Ru assesses a rule that governs all actions of a specific type, as opposed to au which examines each individual action. Focusing solely on utility and ignores core ethical concepts such as justice, rights and desert. There is a worry that ru will eventually just collapse into au.
