Definition 3 of derivative: function f is differentiable at c if f (c) exists, f (x) also = f(x, read as f prime of x or y (y prime) Find f (x) at x = 3 if f(x) = Solution: use definition 2, c = 3. Multiply the top and bottom by 2(x+1) to remove fractions, get 2(2x)-3(x+1) on top and expand only top and simplify to get this next: The (x-3) cancels, and plug in x = 3 to get the solution.
