Phonetics- the branch of linguistics that examines the inventory and structure of the sounds of language. Any sound used in the human language. There are a finite number of speech sounds (around 600 consonants and 200 vowels) *no language uses all of these sounds, but the human body can make all of these sounds. Articulatory phonetics- approach to phonetics that studies the physiological mechanisms of speech production. Acoustic phonetics- approach to phonetics that is concerned with measuring and analyzing the physical properties of sound waves produced when we speak. Examines the physics of sound and sound waves. Ipa (international phonetic alphabet)- a universal system for transcribing the sounds of speech. 1:1 correspondence between sound and symbol (only one sound per symbol) There are other transcribing systems but the ipa is the most common one and is universally utilized. Square brackets [ ] are placed around phonetic symbols to indicate phonetic transcriptions.
