Document Summary

Arteries: carry oxygenated blood from heart to tissues. They will decrease in size as we move away from the heart, becoming arterioles and further, capillaries. Veins: carry de-oxygenated blood from tissues to heart. Capillaries: where exchange of oxygen and nutrients occur with venous system. Tunica externa: outer layer, also known as tunica adventitia. Very elastic, allowing with vasodilation and constriction of arteries. Tunica intima: inner layer, lined with endothelium to create a very smooth layer because it has lumen (space) for blood to easily pass through. Elastic lamina between each layer, to provide and maintain shape of arteries so everything stays in place as blood passes. Largest in size to allow high degree of expansion in artery. Come right o aorta (eg. aortic arch, abdominal aorta) Tunica media regulate blood ow in these arteries. Femoral artery: comes o internal iliac artery going down to thigh, delivering blood to quads. Narrow lumina (passageway) with thick muscular wall.
