The monastic reform: the church has not been a strong institution in the early middle-ages, charlemagne (800 crowned emperors by pope leon iii). Separations of roles between the pope and the emperor: after charlemagne"s death: creation of strong local powers in the hands of abbots and bishops as well as lay aristocrats. Simony and nicolaism in the church of the 10th century: the term simony derives from simon magus, a biblical character who tried to buy healing powers from st peter. We will distinguish components: peace of god rallies, monastic reform, action led by specific popes. Pax dei-peace of god: masses started to protest the violence and the corruption of local churches due to warlords and strife. It became the first mass peace movement in the western history: essential part of the pax became the liberats ecclesie- freedom of the church from political games, the protests were inspired by some monasteries.
