Feudalism, aristocracy and peasantry between 11th and 13th century. Early period: feudal relationships started out as alliances between war-lords, equals or near equals, for military protection. In the 12th century 1100s, the legal development of the feudal relationships leads to a more hierarchical structure: the lord on top will be more powerful than his vassal. Homage ceremony: homage; from the latin term homo and man: ceremony during the vassal becomes the lord"s man. This means that he has to ensure the protection of the lord in case of war: 1.
