Demeter, distraught, roams earth for nine days without eating or drinking, before being told by helius what has happened. Demeter, still grieving, causes devastating year of no harvest, plague, famine. Zeus sends down all the immortal gods in hopes of convincing her to rejoin the gods, but she refuses until she is able to see her daughter again. Zeus sends hermes to tell hades to permit persephone to return with him to above hades allows this, but tells persephone he will be a good husband and she will be a great goddess by his side. Persephone eats a pomegranate given to her by hades; this means she would stay in underworld for portion of the year and upper world for portion of the year.
