Video: soil formation and the soil forming factors teaching film. Thick soil in tropical places due to certain minerals in soils. Important in terms of extremes which generate weathering of rocks and soil. High or dry rainfall: desserts and tropics. Extremes of temperature: freezing and thawing or heating and drying. Plants to break up soil particles, earthworms to separate soil particles. Living part of soil: plants (roots help weathering process by breaking soil and move nutrients around), animals (earthworm has key role in moving soil particles around, bacteria and fungi play a huge role in biological activity of soil) On a slope vs. in a valley. Thick soil in valley bottoms, therefore easier to do farming. Shape of landscape being on steep hill (thin soil, due to gravity, few cm of soil), mountain top, valley bottom (deeper soil) is important in soil formation. Rock formation from glacial deposits and river deposits. Volcanic ash can add nutrients to soil.
