GLGY 209 Lecture Notes - Lecture 7: Carbonaceous Chondrite, Solar Wind, Interphase
Document Summary
Meteorites are small sized celestial bodies that come in collision with another large sized celestial body (planet, asteroid, natural satellite) One classification does so by chemical composition vs texture. Silicate dominated (stony meteorites, rocky meteorites, chondrites) In the mass of these, most of them have chemical structures consisting of silicate (mm or cm in size). This structure forms when 2 large celestial bodies collide and a lot fo energy is dissipated. The matter in collision zone become incandescent quickly. Because matter is in frigid temperature, it crystallizes immediately. Further subdivided if they have chondrules in their composition. Relatively small number of stony meteorites that lack chondrules. Stony meteorites, that have upto 5% of organic matter (not alive). This organic matter is not the source of organic matter on earth (not the same) Often referred to in literature because the ones with chondrites. Iron dominates, nickel is the second element.
