Southern alberta is semi-arid region that does not usually receive high amounts of rainfall. High-pressure system in northern alberta blocked passage to low- pressure are to south. Blocked circulation and easterly winds pumped humidity on slopes of rocky mountains foothills, causing heavy rain. Rainfall amounts of over 200 mm in less than two days in many regions of province, particularly west and southwest of calgary. In canmore, over 220 mm fell in 36 hours, nearly half of town"s annual average rainfall. In high river, rainfall amounts of 325 mm in less than 48 hours. Rain on snow is a miserable thing because it washes snow away . Snow gets melted by the rain falling on it and that compounds the situation and makes it even worse news. Scientists have shown that rain does not directly melt much snow. Other forms of energy melt more snow during these events.
