CMMB 343 Lecture Notes - Lecture 29: Autoinducer, Gram-Negative Bacteria, Cell Membrane

20 views5 pages

Document Summary

Pathogenic cells may interact to increase toxin concentration with enough cell density. Autoinducer 1: organic compounds will be produced by bacteria. Mainly function in gram negative bacterial system (99%). Some exceptional cases have been found in gram positive (not common) Short peptides: these peptides can be in linear or circular form. This method is used by gram positive bacteria. Some gram negative bacteria have shown to use this (not common) Purpose of signalling molecules is to monitor cell density. If density is high enough, effects can be made evident. In low cell density, once the molecule is produced and released to external environment, it will go away, so molecule doesn"t accumulate. In high density, each cell will produce a little bit of the molecule, so easily, its possible to accumulate high concentration of signalling molecules. Some of these signalling molecules, by diffusion, can go back into the cell.
