Chapter 10 an explosion of complexity: mesopotamia, africa, and europe. The producion of a food surplus is crucial in all modern civilizaions. Look at the staisic for the usa from 1920-2010. Fewer and fewer people needed to be food producers, freeing up a huge majority if the populaion to do other things: art, science, military, etc. Lots of food allows people to congregate in those areas. Some people become elite arisans through this specializaion. A formal government: a formal government headed by a powerful ruler, like the egypian pharaoh depicted in many ancient art forms, is emblemaic of complex socieies, past and present. A system of record keeping to keep track of taxes, food surpluses, military service, conscripted labour for the state is crucial for complex socieies. Conlict modules: has to have an overarching power to overcome internal conlicts. They emerge through the need to organize or disperse conlict in a society.
