Goffman"s work = question advertisements about how they portray men and women. Be an active participant when looking at ads. The traditional codes of masculinity and feminity that are presented as gender displays. Gender displays: non-verbal conventionalized (standards, normal) portrayals of men and women. Evolution: change in gene frequencies in a population. Differential reproduction: some individuals leave more offspring behind than others. Survival of the fittest: you deserve to be here. 2 features darwin noticed about sex-limited traits: more costly to produce, more obvious. Males compete: to exclude rivals, to mate more often, and/or to mate at the right time, sexual dimorphism in size is a really good indicator that males fight directly for access to females.
