Gender stereotypes: beliefs and attitudes about what activities/behaviours are appropriate for men or women: the media picks up on these stereotypes, promotes and maintains them, we start to think that this is what society is like. Gender stereotypes in video games, music videos, movies and advertising: There are two main trends of how men and women are represented in the mainstream media: Men: presented as aggressive: no diversity, narrow version of what it means to be masculine. Women: presented as objects of desire: general trend, narrow version of what it means to be feminine. Gender display: conventionalized standards of how men and women are displayed in media. Ritualization of subordination: women laying down, canting postures, women presented as defenceless.
