Stem (devonian) tetrapods: limbs with carpals (or tarsals) and digits. Primitive condition = lots of existing toes/ ngers, and gradually reduced over time. Note human beings are relatively primitive in digit count (still have 5 digits: pelvic girdle attached to sacral vertebrae via ilium. Strengthens vertebral column (allows attachment of larger muscles) Small hypomandibula > columella or stapes > in spiracle tract. Stapes abuts against cranium > support only (no hearing role?)
