Science fiction in literary criticism/cultural studies a long time ago, 1909. Though the author of the machine stops had his present . Some sci fi is used as criticism of what we have now technologically. Technological context of the author prior to 1909: there were zeppelins, the notion of a calculating machine, the first flight by the wright brothers. No work was done on computational machines until around ww2, alan turing. Internet was only conceived of 60 years after this author. Literary context of the author: subterranean narrative. Like journey to the centre of the earth. Our context imagine something radically different, anything could happen, alternate visions of human society. Kind of like how we see space sci fi right now. Most of the societies would be seen as utopias, am impossibly good place. Can still have a split between good and bad like in the time machine.
