1a. Art and the Real World
Figurative art:

o Depicts recognizable objects, events etc.
o Shows things as we would see them in the everyday world.
Abstract art:
o Characteristic modern art, eg. Braque, Picasso
o Depicts abstract shapes, lines, etc, in ways that isolate formal elements.
o Tries to reproduce mental experience.
1b. Imitatio mundi
>Imitiation theory in Art: General assumption that art is in some sense a representational or imitation of
the world. Covers most philosophies or theories of art before 1900, and general understanding of art.
Because all art before mid-nineteenth century had been imitative (Danto and Dickie argue),
theoists of at idetified this as the oe featue it shaed, ad hih thus defied at as a
category.

o Note: music always difficult to categorize this way.
Moeoe, this feeds fous o aesthetis o the ho of seeig ad epeieig at, as this is
what distinguishes the represented from the representation
o Abstract art is classically aesthetic in that it seeks to reproduce elements of seeing in
formal ways.
1c. The world gone mad
>Dada: Avant garde art movement rejecting logic, rationality, and mechanised modernity after WWI.
Focus on the irrational and the unconscious. Explicit attack on aesthetics as standard of art.
Dada at oeet ejeted lassial aestheti ategoies: if old at as aestheti, e at
must not be.
