SOC100 Lecture 5: Sociology 100- Lecture 5
Document Summary
Research by gordon gallup (1977) has found that some apes have a sense of self, whereas other mammals do not. They realize the image in the mirror is not another ape. Apes were involved with the rouge test; after waking up from anaesthetics if the animal recognized a red spot on the mirror, it indicated that they had a concept of self. Self concept clarity (scc) is de ned as the extent to which the content of an individual"s self beliefs is clearly and con dently de ned an internally consistent. All human beings have self concept, but the degrees are different. Ex: people who have low scc are more likely to express anxiety, fear, loneliness etc. They also tend to participate in chronic self analysis, an involuntary negative form of self inspection. Their inner-self is dark; they tend to have substance abuse issues. Symbolic interactions: everything springs to the self through social relationships and environments.
