The discipline of sociology is rooted in the concerns that social thinkers had about social change and social con ict. In the writings of several intellectuals, there was a shift in focus from a moral obligation to god and the monarch (the king) to the pursuit of self-interest. August conte (1798-1857); in 1838 he used the term sociology. His new way if looking at sociology was to apply what was going on in natural sciences to study of behaviour in human society. Used methods i. e. : systematic analysis to apply to human societies. Motivating his work: chaos he sees on streets yet europeans are still standing. He liked a powerful government that would take care of his citizens, ie social welfare. If sociology would take off, it would contribute to social engineering. What makes conte remarkable is that he was one of the rst people to think about society in a scienti c way.
