Stokes: you are not entitled to your opinion. Problem with saying everyone in entitled to their opinion: shuts down the conversation; hard to have intelligent conversation with someone. Opinions should be made when there is evidence and expertise. Opinions made without expertise is disrespecting people of expertise who can give useful opinions. Theory: explain of how and why specific behaviours are related. Theoretical approach: basic image of society that guides thinking and research. Approaches to sociology: microsociology interested in actions, motivations of individuals and small groups, macrosociology looking at the big picture; how society operates as a whole. Sociological by approach (sociological perspectives: structural functionalism. Functionalism: focuses on how sociological systems operate and produce consequences. Structuralism: explaining social forms and their contributions to social cohesion. It is not good at understanding conflict or social change. Rarely used in sociology today: emile durkheim.
