Approaches to sociology: microsociology interested in actions, motivations of individuals and small groups, macrosociology looking at the big picture; how society operates as a whole. Sociological by approach (sociological perspectives: structural functionalism. Functionalism: focuses on how sociological systems operate and produce consequences. Structuralism: explaining social forms and their contributions to social cohesion. It is not good at understanding conflict or social change. Rarely used in sociology today: emile durkheim.
