SOC100 Lecture Notes - Lecture 2: Critical Thinking, Auguste Comte, Interdisciplinarity
Document Summary
Emerges out of philosophy, economics, history, psychology, and law. 1923 was the first time sociology program was introduced. Sociology is one of the two top programs sought after. Stated that science (and scientific method) can be used to understand society. In his day, this was not thought as conventional. One of the assumptions of sociology is that. Society is greater than the sum of its parts. Social relations cannot be reduced to an individual. Suggesting society is doing things based not only on aggregation of social behaviours, but rather social pressure/norms. Social life is a complex web of interconnectedness. Distinct disciplinary boundaries are beginning to happen. Ex: here in first year uni because we are asked and required to take courses of study as a way to expand our education. Idea of post-disciplinarity there are blurring boundaries between disciplines. Ie: typically at the phd level, there are cross degrees. It"s important to understand disciplinaries beyond just our own understanding.
