Direct evidence: (these are john"s definitions: skeletal, dental, skins, preserved whole samples, tissue samples, blood samples. Indirect evidence: photographs, movies, sound recordings, tracks, traces (burrows, prints, etc. ) sightings. When the evidence fails to match the prediction, the original hypothesis is falsified, and should be abandoned. When the evidence fails to match the prediction, good scientists happily admit that they were probably wrong. When the evidence fails to match the prediction, people generally rationalize rather than giving up on their original beliefs. What to ask: how good is the evidence, what other explanations exist, which hypothesis is most parsimonious? (i. e. which hypothesis best accounts for both the evidence, and what we know from other aspects of science?) Ivory-billed woodpecker was the largest woodpecker in north america.
