R SOC900B Lecture Notes - Lecture 6: Evaporation, Biofilter, Feather Moss
Document Summary
In western canada, the forested zones produce most of the water that flows through the rivers for use by cities, industries, and agriculture. Forests control the amount and time of flow. The hydrologic cycle: full scale hydrological cycle, forests affect infiltration, surface run off and evaporation from soil and vegetation, percipitation (rain) -> surface run off -> evaporation/transpiration -> clouds. Interception: water held in the canopy of trees, throughfall, water flowing through the canopy to the ground, transpiration, water evaporating from the leaves (through stomata) Infiltration: water that penetrates the soil, surface flow, water running over the surface, subsurface flow, horizontal or vertical movement of water in the upper soil. Water balance: (change in)s= p q e (i + t) (change in)s = change in soil storage: p = precipitation, q = runoff (e. g. outflowing into streams, e = evaporation (from every surface) I = interception (canopy, forest floor: t = transpiration (plant function)
