Ecology of the mountain pine beetle: native to north america, old forests and mild winters have allowed explosion of the beetle populations (they need old weak trees) Fires and logging create more resilient forests: killed so (cid:373)a(cid:374)y trees they"re starti(cid:374)g to ru(cid:374) out i(cid:374) so(cid:373)e regio(cid:374)s, carry fungal spores that block the flow of water in the tree. The fungus is what kills the tree, not the beetle: larvae eat the fungus and sugars in the wood.
