Classical cog sci thought of as synthesis of cartesian philosophy (disembodied mind responsible for sense think act, mind linked to body and world) and materialism (mind is caused by brain) To say two systems are strongly equivalent (ie cpu simulation and human mind) is to say theyre solving the same info processing problem with the same algorithm based on same architecture. Establishing strong equivalence requires collecting behavioral evidence, to reverse engineer algorithm. Descartes: wanted to find a set on uncontestable truths which could build a philosophy. Like math used methods of deduction to derive geometries. His method used extreme skepticism (anything that was doubted was excluded). Only thing that was true was that he existed. Mind and body were separate, can divide body but not the mind, made of different stuff : literally disembodied. Existence of mind doesn"t depend on existence of body.
