Selective attention: once you perceive a small subset (see something, even if it is very miniscule and attracts your attention), you ignore the rest of the stuff going around you. Allows you to improve the perception of stimuli in focus. Role of eye movements: can help focus, can shift attention without changing the visual focus, covert attention: shift in attention without shifting the corresponding eye movement, overt attention: shift in attention that involves a shift in gaze. Cocktail party phenomenon: allocation of resources. You are able focus on one conversation but at the same time, you"re also unaware of other conversations. Other conversations that use your name will gain your focus.
