An unjustiiable, negative attitude toward someone based solely on his or her membership in a group. Can be accurate or inaccurate, but cannot be applied to every single member of the group. Simply put: they don"t describe all members of the group. Why: stereotypes are often based on one"s own limited experience, stereotypes are often formed based on isolated publicized events. Illusory correlation: generalizations are by deinition, not always true, all groups are targets of prejudice & discrimination. Prejudice over blatant prejudice has been on the decline. Mit researchers: looked for response rate of the job applicants, applicants with white name: response 10, applicants with black name: 6, just as qualiied applicants. Ayres (1991: researchers visited 90 chicago car dealers, confederates negotiate car for 000, everything same except race and sex of person (white males, black males, white females and black females) We try to be more tolerant externally but that does not mean it"s not there internally.
