Emerges in the ganges plain (south of the himalayan mountains in india) in the 5th century bce. 3 jewels/refuges of buddha 3 part vow taken by buddhists. Buddha enlightened one ; this is a title not a name. Generally referring to siddhartha gautama (fat happy guy most of us recognize) Prince in shakya a. k. a shakya muni (muni = sage) (-) aspect - removal of desire (and all evil that goes with it) (+) aspect - attainment of perfect happiness fulfillment. Life stories are symbolic of buddhist ideals to obtain nirvana. Recognize suffering; use middle way which is between the two extremes. Nothing is permanent/eternal including the self and the soul . All things are dependant on something else. Book is an abstract concept (in philosophy= higher form) Books consist of words and pages and structure etc. (lower form) There is no eternal self: dharma. First sermon teaches about life ; how to obtain nirvana.
