PSYCO105 Lecture Notes - Lecture 25: Electroconvulsive Therapy, Panic Disorder, Benzodiazepine
Document Summary
Psych 105: individual and social behaviour (11th march 2019)- lecture 25. When a person is diagnosed with a psychological disorder they can be treated with biological treatments, psychotherapy or both. Attempt to relieve the disorder by directly altering bodily processes. 3 main types of biological treatments: drugs, electroconvulsive shock therapy and psychosurgery. Drugs are the most common, but they can have negative side effects like addiction. Sometimes the negative side effects can be more severe than the condition it is trying to treat itself. Decrease the activity of dopamine that directly/ indirectly reduces psychotic symptoms. Many patients discontinue taking their drugs and experience relapses and require readmission to a hospital. A significant number of patients who stop taking their drugs do well without the drugs. These patients no longer need treatment they stop stowing up to the clinic, so the clinicians are not aware of it. Before 1960s barbiturates were prescribed but it was heavily addictive.
