PSYCO105 Lecture Notes - Lecture 6: Lev Vygotsky, Object Permanence, Egocentrism
Document Summary
Maturation: the genetically programmed biological process that governs our growth. Cephalocaudal principle: the tendency for development to proceed in a head-to-foot direction. Chronic, severe malnutrition not only stunts general growth and brain development, but also is a major source of infant death worldwide. Developmental differences are not due to biological differences, but are more likely the result of economic and cultural factors and differences in parenting. 2 key processes of cognitive development according to piaget: assimilation - new experiences incorporated into existing schemas. Ex) a baby sucking on a new object, calling a horse a big doggy , etc: accommodation - new experiences cause existing schemas to change. Ex) object too big to suck on, eventually realizing horses differ from dogs. World understood through sensory experiences and physical (motor) interactions. Realizing they can do things that cause reactions/consequences. Object permanence: the understanding that an object continues to exist even when it no longer can be seen.
