Factor analysis: a statistical technique that explains a larger number of correlations in terms of a small number of underlying factors. If intelligence is a single, general ability, then there should be a very strong, positive correlation between people"s performances on all kinds of tests. Spearman"s research was that he measured how children could discern small di erences between colour, pitch, and weight. Two-factor theory of intelligence: spearman"s theory suggests that every task requires a combination of a general ability and skills that are speci c to the task. Thurstone noticed that scores of di erent measures were clustered. Top-down approach: administer broad survey of human abilities, identify which abilities the survey measures or failed to measure. It can reveal middle-level abilities not included in a bottom-up approach. Crystalized intelligence: accuracy and amount of information available for processing. Sternberg: he su ered from test anxiety, and he criticized the iq tests, saying that it doesn"t measure all types of intelligence.
