Conditioned stimuli- this is the response elicited by a cs after repeatedly being associated with a. For conditioning to work, the cs onset generally must precede the ucs onset. For conditioning to work best, the ucs and cs must partially overlap or occur close together in time. Once a strong cs/cr link has been established, css can be treated as ucss to create new css this is called second-order (or higher order) conditioning.
