For conditioning to work best, the ucs and cs must partially overlap or occur close together in time. Once a strong cs/cr link has been established, css can be treated as ucss to create new css this is called second-order (or higher order) conditioning. Method- male japanese quails were presented with sexually receptive females. Manipulation- prior to being presented with the females, half of the males were presented with a blue cloth object. Results-after 30 matings, males were presented with a blue cloth object and behavior was observed. If males had never seen the object before, it was ignored.
