Consciousness is a subjective experience of the world de ned by experience. Mysteries of consciousness - other minds, the mind/body problem. Philosopher"s zombie: if you could replicate your body and teach it what to say and do perfectly, even if it has no consciousness, it could seem conscious. This is why it"s hard to identify psychopaths. Brain activity may precede subjective experience - monism. Experiment: decide whenever you want to move your hand mind leads to subjective experience. Unity: resistance to division. cannot think 2 thoughts at the same time. Selectivity: capacity to chose what to pay attention to. Ltering out information, tuning in to other information. Cocktail party phenomena, hearing your name even if focused on something else. Levels of consciousness: minimal conciousness : body sensations, re ex. sensory input, physical action output. experience of sensation, full conciousness : ability to know and re ect on mental state. Recognize thoughts, ability to think, and controlling thoughts.
