POL S212 Lecture Notes - Lecture 6: White Privilege, Marxism, Radical Theory
Document Summary
Problem in political theory: relations of domination should be highlighted, although slavery is spoken about it"s not discussed how it"s shaped the system. Issue is philosophers and historians ignoring systemic white privilege: most white political philosophers have worked with a contractarianism whose factual presuppositions obfuscate or deny the centrality of white racism and white domination to us history. In their exclusion of race in their ignoring of systemic white privilege, the tacit assumptions of contemporary contractarianism reproduce at a more abstract level and in more exacerbated form the misrepresentations of mainstream political science. (451) Instead he is advocating the revival of the original meaning of the concept of white supremacy: the system privileging (independently of their beliefs) of the white population, as manifested in social, economic, and (formal) political structures. White supremacy" would then constitute an overarching abstract political concept that would correct for the evasions and silences on race of mainstream political theory (449)
