A subfield within political science that studies global events to determine their causes and effects. Historically, dominated by statist theory theories- take the state as the primary unit of analysis. Thinking behind the state: newer theories have emerged that look at other institutions, from the local to the transnational. A narrow focus on the state overlooks very important aspects of global politics. Telling the story of a field fulfills an educational and disciplinary function (always going to be alternative perspectives) The dominant way of telling the story of the ir field is told using the great debate. Debate 1: post wwi- realists vs. idealists (the world had just witness a huge break down of inter state relations in wwi. Idealists- thought that we could prevent future wars if we could get states to cooperate. League of nations- organization between states to prevent future wars, but it broke down)
