Natural process that occurs as the release of eggs and estrogen/progesterone from the ovaries decline to the point where they are no longer released. Indicated when a woman has not had a menstrual period for 12 consecutive months. Typical age of menopause is 51, but some women experience signs of their body changing (decline in hormones) before that. Health promotion - ways to cope with changes. Sexuality - moisturizer, non-hormonal treatments, hormonal remedy (prescription) Hot ashes - reduce hot beverages, spicy good, wearing layers of light clothing. Risk for heart disease - estrogen is protective for heart disease in young women, risk for heart disease is the same as men in older women. Risk for osteoporosis - weight baring exercises (walk, weight training), calcium in diet (1200 mg/ day for women 50 yrs) 25,700 canadian women will be diagnosed in 2016.
